The renewal of this National Historic District, the “ninth square” of New Haven’s 350 year old urban grid plan was conceived as the key to the reinvention of downtown New Haven as a 24 hour arts and entertainment center. The project involved the rehabilitation of virtually all the historic four- to six-story buildings and the construction of new structures on existing vacant lots, all integrating retail on the ground floors with housing above. More than half the units were reserved for low- to moderate-income tenants.
