2014 Award of Excellence in Design by NYC Public Design Competition for NYBG's East Gate Entranc
A project of the Department of Cultural Affairs, the Department of Parks & Recreation, and the New York Botanical Garden.
Towers|Golde’s design for NYBG’s new East Gate Entry and Green Zone (composting and operations) was recognized with an Awards of Excellence in Design by the NYC Public Design Commission at its 32nd Awards Ceremony in July. The project will transform the public visitor experience from the adjacent Bronx neighborhood, creating a gracious arrival with a new, accessible walkway that features a bridge traversing the dramatically undulating terrain. This new Magnolia Walk will “float” through the treetops of an expanded magnolia collection, linking the gate with the main circulation and its tram route as well as the adjacent family facilities. The restoration plantings on the hillsides will feature successional native trees and shrubs. This re-vegetation effort and the new state-of-the-art composting operations will be the focus of the educational component of the project which will highlight the philosophical and technical commitment of the institution to using and promoting the best practices of sustainable horticulture.
