Healthy Kentucky Research Building, University of Kentucky
T|G designed an ‘intensive’ rooftop landscape plaza as the social and visual focus for a research laboratory complex. The one-acre terrace features a tree-shaded grassy ‘common’, outdoor eating areas and tensile shade structures. Granite seating walls with integral lighting meander through the space, supporting richly-planted beds.
Reflecting the University’s commitment to sustainable improvements, the project features rainwater harvesting for irrigation and indoor/outdoor bicycle storage – to encourage healthier transit modes. A network of textured pedestrian walkways subtly direct people through the complex of spaces. A 200+ car parking area, streetscapes and a service drive into a below-grade loading area serve the complex.
