Ridgefield Library Expansion

A complex program on a small, steeply sloped site, intensive coordination with an adjacent construction project, and an extensive municipal permitting process on this project called for a site planner with a unique blend of talents.
This complete renovation and expansion of Ridgefield’s only library presented several significant issues. The total building square footage was increased by over 50 percent by the addition of a new lower level which is accessed via an inviting courtyard designed to be shared with an adjacent theater building, also under construction. Subtle grading interventions minimized disturbance to existing trees and provided convenient and direct universal access to each of the three building levels and enabled the re-opening of the original Morris Building’s iconic front doors, symbolically and functionally re-connecting the library with Main Street.
