Grace Hopper College (formerly Calhoun College),
Yale Residential College

The complete renovation of this 1930 gothic-revival residential complex called for revitalizing the landscape to serve new handicapped accessible pedestrian circulation patterns, provide a generous activity space and add more semi-private sitting areas, all while unifying it in the traditional Yale landscape character. A sub-grade building expansion resulted in nearly half of this intensively-used courtyard being rebuilt over a roof with very limited soil depth. Renovation work required the replacement of virtually all plantings within the college.
