The major design challenge of the Central Power Plant expansion project was to sensitively insert a five-story building into a tiny site between a 1917 Collegiate Gothic industrial building and a contemporary  residential complex.ᅠ The detailed streetscape treatments of masonry walls, metal fencing, historic-styled campus lighting and specialty gates all seamlessly knit the project into the neighborhood context.

The extremely tight site conditions required unusual collaboration within the design team; the building footprint even responds to the turning radius demands of servicing trucks.ᅠ Hazardous material handling requirements also influenced the design.
