has been pleased to direct the restoration, enhancement, and
expansion of this iconic cultural landscape comprised of nine
sequential residential college renovation projects over the
course of what will be almost 16 years. The Yale University
campus is unique in that it is composed of a series of enclosed,
landscaped outdoor rooms. More than 25 of those courtyards as
well as numerous ancillary spaces and 10 blocks of downtown
streetscape have been completely redesigned and re-constructed.
Where new, the
site design has been determinedly contemporary. Where historic,
the designs have been highly sensitive to the Colleges’
neo-gothic and Georgian style and the landscape precedents set
by the original designer of most of these courtyards, Beatrix
Jones Farrand. Refurbishments have included significant
modifications to meet contemporary needs, including
accessibility, or to accommodate below-grade expansions.
