The Smith
College campus of today is almost five times larger than it was
in 1892 when Frederick Law Olmsted developed its first
landscape master plan. T|G’s challenge in developing a
contemporary Landscape Master Plan was to expand that historic
vision, while enhancing the aesthetic, pedagogical and communal
values of the institution. The resultant plan, prepared with
Cornelia Hahn Oberlander, achieves these goals with a strategic
application of core planning principles. The Botanic Garden is
expanded to address ecological concerns and to include new areas
for environmental studies. The campus gateways, its edges and
its street crossings are redesigned for visual identity,
pedestrian safety, and civic improvement. Major open spaces are
enlarged and enhanced.
Implementation
of the plan is being accomplished by a series of site and
building projects including the Arts Center, the Student Center
and the Conservatory. Towers|Golde has continued to serve the
College as Campus Landscape Architect.
