CONNECTICUT'S 9-11 LIVING MEMORIAL

Westport, CT

Owner:

State of Connecticut

It was a tremendous honor for Towers|Golde to be selected to create a place for the people of Connecticut, and most specifically the bereaved families of the state, to come together to remember, reflect, and heal.

The families wanted “place”, not a monument - a place that would invoke the power of trees to symbolize life and renewal.ᅠ Thus tees were used as the major element, but the incorporation of the views off-site is the distinguishing character of T|G’s design.ᅠ The gathering/seating space in the memorial marker are at the core of the site, orienting views toward the location of the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center, once visible from the Sherwood Island point.ᅠ This emphasis on a view toward some thing that is no longer there symbolizes the emotional search and longing, of both the families and the greater community of the State, for those loved ones who are no longer here…for those victims lost, not only in New York, but in all of the tragic events of 9-11.
